Many of you may already know that there are two bills have been filed in the Tennessee State Legislature to END the Sons of Confederate Veterans Specialty License Plates (Senate Bill - SB0952 & House Bill - HB1036).
As many of you already know, the funds from the SCV License Plate sales provides much needed revenue for the restoration of flags and support of the Tennessee State Museum. These plates have been legally issued by the State of Tennessee. Just because you do not like or support the benefiting organization is no reason to target, or ban or remove a Specialty License Plate legally issued by the State.
However, that is exactly what several of our Tennessee Legislators are attempting to do. Because of the controversy cause by these legislators the bills have been sent to a sub-committee of Transportation & Safety Committee in Nashville.
There is a chance we can kill these bills in the sub-committee by having our members make a phone call to the legislators listed below and encouraging them to vote against the bills. We need four votes to kill the bills in the sub-committee. If the bills are not killed in the sub-committee, they are scheduled for a general vote on 19 February. If the bills are delayed, another vote is scheduled on 26 February.
This sub-committee consists of the following legislators:
LEGISLATORS ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN by SCV Members

him to vote against the bills.

him to vote against the bills.

(615) 741-3830- She represents District 91: Shelby County Tennessee, Cities: Suburbs of Memphis.
- We need members, preferably constituents from those Shelby County & Memphis to call her office directly and
encourage her to vote against the bills.

Jason Potts - He supports the bills and will vote to pass them.
Democrat - He represents District 59: part of Davidson County, in the area south of Nashville.
(615) 741-2035- We need members, preferably constituents from those Shelby County & Memphis to call his office directly and
encourage him to vote against the bills.

Even if your Representative is not listed above, it would help to call your respective Representative & Senator and encourage them to vote against SB0952 & HB1036. When a legislator hears from one of their constituents directly, it has the greatest effect.
Here is exactly what to say when you call your Senator & Representative:

"My Name is _____________. I am a citizen & voter of the State of Tennessee.  I live in ( name of county or city ). I am opposed to SB0952 & HB1036 that bans the Sons of Confederate Veterans Speciality License Plate. I encourage you to vote against these bills if they are brought to a vote in committee, or the floor of the House & Senate for a vote.”

Major James T. Huff

James Thomas Huff was born near Del Rio on June 3, 1839 to Riley Brooks and Susan Huff.  After his father left and went to Georgia and never returned, his mother died and he went to live with his grandfather Stephen.  Stephen then petitioned to have his name changed to Huff.

When the war broke out, he was a student at Mossy Creek College (now Carson-Newman).  He dropped out and joined the 5th Tennessee Cavalry in January, 1862 as a private.  In April he left this unit and went to Hot Springs and joined Col. McDowell’s 6th N.C. Infantry Battalion.  Later that summer, he returned to Cocke County to raise a company of infantry and was mustered in on Sept. 6th as Captain of Co. H of the 60th North Carolina Infantry.  The 6th Battalion being elevated to regiment with the addition of 4 more companies.

Captain Huff participated in the battles of Murphreesboro, Vicksburg, and those around Chattanooga, including Chicamauga, where many of his company was wiped out.  He was promoted to Major in December, ’63.  He spent most of ’64 in North Georgia trying to prevent Sherman from reaching Atlanta, receiving a minor wound at Rocky Face Ridge, Ga.  He was with Joe Johnston’s army when they surrendered in late April, ’65.

Major Huff then returned to Cocke County and the Huff farm.  It’s been said that he might not have been able to return if it hadn’t been for his Uncle Andy Huff who had been a captain in the 2nd N.C. Infantry U.S.  In 1868 he married Jane Adeline Stokely and they had 9 children, 7 girls and 2 boys.  He remained a staunch Confederate the rest of his life and wouldn’t even allow his daughters to wear a blue dress.

Major Huff died September 24, 1919 at the age of 80 and is buried on a hill overlooking the farm where he spent most of his life.

The Major James T. Huff Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp,
Camp # 2243
Newport, Tennessee

The Major James T. Huff Camp 2243 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans was chartered on March 15, 2014 with ten members in Newport, TN.  Eight of these ten members were U. S. Service veterans. Within five months the membership increased to fifteen, and continues to grow.   This growth follows a 5-year strategic plan which targets a membership of 35 within five years.  The camp is a member of Vaughn’s Brigade of East Tennessee, one of the fastest growing brigades within the Tennessee Division.

The namesake for Camp 2243, James T. Huff, was a local hero during the War Between the States, raising a company of infantry early in the war and serving honorably through many hard-fought campaigns until the Army of Tennessee surrendered on May 26, 1865.

Newport, nestled in the Pigeon River valley leading into the Smoky Mountains, is the eastern-most town in Tennessee along the I-40 corridor.  It is the county seat of Cocke County, which like most of East Tennessee, favored the Union at the outbreak of the war.  However, even with the abundance of Union sympathy, approximately 800 men from the county answered the call and fought for the Confederacy.   The camp is challenged to find, record, and maintain the graves of these brave Confederate soldiers throughout the mountainous county’s 900 cemeteries.

The Major James T. Huff camp is committed to educating the general population on the true history of the War Between the States.  In accordance with the 5-year plan, the camp disseminates informative literature at festivals, fairs and other public events, and provides speakers at public functions, civic groups, and school classrooms.  The camp also provides instructional material to home school networks and public schools.

In accordance with the standards set by the general organization of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the Maj. James T. Huff is committed to being politically neutral and racially unbiased.  We welcome any member of high moral character who is a lineal or collateral  descendant of a Confederate soldier.

*** Please Note MEETING LOCATION CHANGE for 2016 ***
The camp meets the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30 at the Sagebrush Restaurant in Newport.
Meeting starts promptly at 6:30.
Please come at 5:30 if you plan to eat.

The Major James T. Huff Camp Library is a new addition not only to the website, but the Huff Camp as well.  The books listed in the attached document will be available for SCV Camp Members to check out and return at the next meeting.  This is a great opportunity to expand your knowledge of our Southern Heritage, Culture and History.
